How to get a high score in Boxes Go Wild
In any number merge game, big scores come from chains rather than single merges. This strategy guide for Boxes Go Wild starts with how points are actually counted, then shows how to set up chain reactions, keep the board open and spend boosters well.
How points are counted
Every merge scores the value of the new box. Inside a chain, each step is multiplied:
| Merge in the chain | Multiplier | Example: making a 64 |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | ×1 | 64 |
| 2nd | ×1.5 | 96 |
| 3rd | ×2 | 128 |
| 4th | ×2.5 | 160 |
| 5th | ×3 | 192 |
When three or more boxes merge at once, that merge gets another ×1.25. Points are rounded down. Nothing else scores: a box landing without a merge is worth nothing, and steel and cursed crates score nothing themselves.
So the same boxes are worth much more merged in one long chain than in separate drops. Every tip below follows from that.
Build staircases for chain reactions
- Line up values that double. A column or row like 64, 32, 16, 8 is a chain waiting to happen: one 8 landing next to the 8 sets off 16, 32, 64 and 128 in a row.
- Keep your biggest box in a corner. Put it in an outer column at the bottom and build the next values towards it, so chains run into it instead of across the board.
- Don't bury big boxes. A small number on top of a big one blocks it until you clear the small one. Drop small numbers in the columns that hold small numbers.
- Look sideways too. Boxes merge with equal neighbours left, right and below. A box landing between two equal boxes merges three at once for the ×1.25 bonus.
Keep the columns low
- Spread the height. One tall column ends the game while the others are half empty. Keep the tallest column a row or two below the top.
- Use NEXT. Seeing the box after the falling one lets you keep a spot ready for it. NEXT is free in your first three games and with WILD PASS.
- Early in a game, play for the lift. You start with three rows. The board lifts at 60, 600 and 4,000 points, and if a column hits the ceiling before the first lift, the board lifts early instead of ending the game.
- Watch for bigger values. Once your biggest box reaches 128, 1024 and 4096, bigger boxes start to fall (up to 128). Leave room for them.
Use WILD RUSH
Every chain step after the first fills the WILD RUSH gauge. When it is full, all your points are doubled for the next 10 drops. Spend those 10 drops setting off your best prepared chain, not on single merges.
Time STEAM BLAST
Once the board is at full height, your points fill the steam meter. The first STEAM BLAST needs 15,000 points, the next one 2.5 times more, and you get at most two per game. A blast clears the whole bottom row: use it when the bottom row is full of small numbers or steel crates that are blocking your merges.
Stop the ROOF DROP
Once the board has reached six rows, PRESSURE turns into a reserve that starts full. Every drop that scores nothing lets 9% of it out, so twelve scoreless drops in a row empty it. Every drop that scores fills it back by its points, and by at least 5%. When the reserve is empty, a warning counts down three drops: any points stop it. If nothing scores, the roof comes down a row and crushes the crates in its way. It never ends the game and never goes below three rows.
- Keep scoring at the top. A small merge every few drops keeps the reserve up. Long runs of plain stacking are what bring the roof down.
- During the warning, take any merge. Even 2 and 2 stops the countdown. Look for the quickest merge, not the best one.
- Keep big crates out of the top row. Only the crates in the row the roof comes down on are crushed. A 512 up there is a 512 lost.
- Climb straight back. After a drop, every scoring drop counts at least 100 points towards lifting the board back to six rows, so a run of small merges gets you there fast.
Steel and cursed crates
- Steel crates appear once you reach 512. They never merge, so break them early: two merges next to one break it and pay 10 coins.
- Cursed crates come in two chains. Merge next to them twice and they become a free box worth double. Plan a chain around a freed cursed crate.
Spend boosters well
- Wild Bomb removes one box. Best on a small box sitting on top of a big one.
- Chain Blast clears every box with the same number. Best when one value (often 2 or 4) is scattered across the board.
- Wild Card doubles one box. Best on the box that completes a staircase: doubling it can start a whole chain.
- COMEBACK bursts the top three boxes of every column when the board is full. It is offered at game over from 256 points.
You can get boosters with coins, from daily rewards, with an optional video, or in packs. The booster guide shows the best moment for each one.
Put the tips to work, then see where you stand on the WILD RANKS.
